A QR code that looks perfect on a screen can fail once it’s printed: wrong resolution, wrong file format, a border that got cropped, or colors with too little contrast. This page covers what changes for print, on top of the free QR code generator, and links to a size calculator and a tester so you can verify before you commit to a print run.
Print resolution is measured in DPI (dots per inch); 300 DPI is the standard for sharp, professional print. A QR code exported as PNG at 300 DPI and the correct physical size will print cleanly, but scaling that same PNG up afterward makes it blurry and can merge modules together. A vector format (SVG) has no DPI at all — it describes shapes mathematically, so it prints crisply at a business-card size or a billboard size from the same file.
PNG is a raster format: fine for web use and small prints at the size it was exported, but it does not scale up cleanly. SVG is a vector format: it scales to any size without quality loss and is the format most print shops now expect for logo-like graphics such as a QR code. PDF wraps a vector QR code (or a raster one) into a page-ready document, useful when a print shop wants a single file with bleed and page size baked in. EPS was the older standard vector format for print, but it has largely been superseded: this generator does not export EPS because SVG covers the same use case for the vast majority of modern print workflows, and every shop we’ve checked that still asks for EPS will also accept SVG or a high-resolution PDF.
The quiet zone is the blank border required around a QR code so a scanner can find its edges. Keep at least 4 modules of clear space on every side, and make sure a page layout tool doesn’t crop it when the code is placed near a margin or bleed line.
Contrast matters more than color choice: dark modules on a light background is the safest combination. Avoid inverting the pattern (light modules on dark) unless you have tested it, and avoid low-contrast brand color pairs, like a mid-tone blue on a mid-tone gray. The design studio includes a contrast check that flags a foreground/background pair before you export it.
Error correction lets a QR code stay scannable even if part of it is damaged, dirty, or covered by a logo. M (15% recovery) works for most clean print jobs; step up to Q (25%) if you’re adding a logo, and H (30%) for outdoor signage exposed to weather, dirt, or repeated handling. Higher error correction slightly increases the module count, which the size calculator accounts for.
Yes, as long as the contrast between the modules and the background stays high — a dark navy or maroon on white usually scans fine. Avoid pairing two mid-tone colors, and never invert the pattern to light modules on a dark background unless you have tested it, since many scanners assume dark-on-light.
Usually, but glare from overhead lighting or a camera flash can wash out part of the pattern. Matte lamination avoids this entirely. If you must use gloss, angle the code slightly away from direct light sources, and use a higher error correction level so a partially glared scan still decodes.
